The transition to environmentally and economically sustainable energy systems has raised hydrogen as one of the main pillars of decarbonization in various energy and industry sectors. Focusing on electrified steam methane reforming (E-SMR), this paper analyzes the potential, challenges, and benefits of this new technology compared to conventional methods such as SMR. The novelty of this study lies in the comprehensive analysis of the role of electrification of chemical processes, especially hydrogen production, in improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and increasing operational flexibility in energy-intensive industries. It also examines the economic and technical comparative studies of different technologies and their integration with renewable sources and power grid systems. It analyzes their role in achieving net-zero goals by 2050. The paper's findings show that E-SMR technology, if accompanied by smart policymaking and appropriate infrastructure development, can effectively replace current high-carbon processes, and play a key role in the energy transition.
